Research Interests

Deba Leach is a first-year Ph.D. student specializing in American art and architecture. She received a B.A. in English at Manhattanville College and an M.A in Art History from the University of Iowa. Deba's early work in historic preservation in Iowa is foundational for her continued work on vernacular and landmark building, town planning, and landscape design.  Her primary area of research for the Ph.D. is regionalist American art and architecture in the twentieth century, especially that which was produced between the world wars. Other research interests include nineteenth-century developments in printing, reproduction technology, and how ideas were and are conveyed in various media. Previous curatorial work for exhibitions on Jacob Lawrence at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. and Grant Wood at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art inform Deba's dissertation topic: the artistic education and working life of another Depression era American artist, Doris Emrick Lee (1905-1983).
