Ali Hval is currently receiving her MFA at the University of Iowa for Painting and Drawing. She grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and graduated from the University of Alabama in 2015 in Studio Art with Honors. In 2015, she was awarded the Wingate Fellowship from the Center of Craft, Creativity, and Design in Asheville, North Carolina in order to pursue a craft-related interest in art for a year and a half. Ali works with fabric as if were paint, using it as a tool for mark-making, interplaying its textures, and building it up sculpturally to create a composition. Her fabric pieces inhabit the floor, walls, and/or the spaces between. They activate the spaces they occupy and the negative space becomes a components of the work.
