Kala’i Blakemore is currently enrolled in the University of Iowa’s graduate printmaking program. Kala’i was raised in Hawai’i and in 2013 she obtained her BA with an emphasis in printmaking from the University of Hawai’i, at Hilo. She has since worked as a studio assistant for Piko Press, Hilo.
In her current work, Kala’i uses surreal imagery to explore the relationship between humans and their environment. Abstracted or partial figures in nature scenes are often the focus of her work, in addition to botanical and animal life.
