Medieval Art

"Maggie Martino is a second-year MA student specializing in medieval art. She earned her BA in English literature from the University of Texas at Austin, and after minoring in art history, she decided to focus on art that was visual instead of written in her graduate work. She is primarily interested in Gothic architecture, and the ways in which the aesthetics of these monumental buildings (especially churches) affected layman viewers’ individual experiences within them. Her current research project will explore these ideas within Chartres Cathedral, especially as they relate to the new aesthetic principles and ideas employed in the construction of Chartres, which are some of the earliest examples of what we now classify as the High Gothic style."
