Service Year Alliance
My name is Csilla Aglaure-Szekelyhidi and I am the College Organizing Manager with Service Year Alliance -- a nonprofit working to make a year of service a common expectation and opportunity for all young Americans. This month, we are focusing specifically on encouraging more young people to do a service year in Iowa, so I wanted to reach out and see if you'd be interested in helping us spread the word! Right now, there are approximately 100 service year opportunities available in Iowa and we've made it super easy to view and search all of them in one place.
For background, a service year is a paid opportunity to develop real-world skills through hands-on service. Think of it like a paid gap year with a purpose. As you may know, service year programs like Iowa Conservation Corps, Green Iowa AmeriCorps, Habitat for Humanity, and Public Allies have all had a tremendous impact on communities across Iowa. From mentoring at-risk youth to preparing for natural disasters and rebuilding trails — there are a large variety of service year opportunities available and organizations that are eager to hire.
As an AmeriCorps NCCC alumna who served in Iowa on flooding response and recovery throughout the state, I have a personal connection to the service year programs Iowa supports. The work we did during our service year not only helped the communities we served, but made us stronger leaders and more engaged citizens. If you have students asking themselves what's next, looking to gain skills and experience for a job — a service year may be just what they're looking for.
I am happy to talk with anyone who is interested in serving and share my personal service year experience with them. Feel free to forward this email along to folks you think might be interested or have them email me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
