Student Office Assistant 

New Job Description – Updated Spring 2019 (02.07.19) 

The College of Engineering’s Mechanical Engineering (ME) department is looking for a Student Office Assistant who can help with social media, newsletter, and office support. They will focus on management of ME social media accounts and preparation of the departmental newsletter as directed. Successful applicants for this position will have: an editorial eye for compelling photography and engaging digital/print design; excellent communication and customer service skills; and can complete follow-through on projects independently. Candidates who have experience in one or more of these areas are preferred – proficiency in all three skillsets is desired but not required. 


• Manage Social Media accounts 

• Design departmental newsletter layout and assist with content writing 

• Develop print projects as needed 

• Track projects from start to finish 

• Collaborate with faculty & outside professionals as needed 

• Provide additional support of basic reception and general office duties 


Applicants must be undergraduate students at the University of Iowa. Proficiency with the Adobe Suite (esp. InDesign) or comparable editing software is required. Excellent interpersonal communication skills are essential for success in this position. Preference given to non-engineering and work-study students. Prefer a commitment of 2 years or more. 

Required Work Schedule: 

Availability during office hours of 8 AM to Noon and 12:30-4:30 PM, Monday – Fridays. We will take your class schedule into consideration. Up to 20 hours per week during fall & spring sessions. Possibility of up to 40 hours/week during breaks and summer. Summer 2019 availability is required. Position is available immediately. 

$10.00-$11.00 per hour based on experience. Raises based on performance.
