Rachel Epstein

Graduate Student
Biography

Rachel is a PhD candidate with a focus on Modern Art. She received a BA from Kalamazoo College in 2016 where she majored in Art History and minored in both Philosophy and English Literature while playing Women’s Varsity Softball.

She attended the University of Iowa and received her MA in Art History in 2018. Her qualifying thesis explored the relationship between Modern art – most notably Surrealism and Dada – and the rise in popularity of science fiction literature and how the two worked to disclose metanarratives of Western society.

Her dissertation will interrogate similar, interdisciplinary threads by examining the influence popular science fiction - such as early- to mid-20th century pulp magazines, novels, and cinema - had on the early British Pop Artists; namely, the Independent Group, Robyn Denny, and the Archigram Group.
