Antonia Baafi
Interdisciplinary PhD Candidate
Biography
Antonia is earning a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies in Studio Art and Art History with a focus on ancient and modern jewelry techniques. She received a BA in Industrial Art with emphasis in Metal Product Design now known as Jewelry and Metalsmithing from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana in 2019.
She then went on to further pursue an MA and MFA in Jewelry and Metal Art from the University of Iowa, graduating in the summer of 2025. Her MFA thesis explored the use of materials in relation to both ancient and modern jewelry and metal working techniques.
As a PhD student, she hopes to further explore jewelry and metal working techniques from antiquity and how they have changed across time. Understanding the origins of these techniques she believes can help change the approach to the study and making of jewelry and metal works. She is drawn to the ancient techniques which some of them have been lost and seeks to investigate if they can be revived with the aid of modern technology.
