The minor in art history requires a minimum of 15 semester hours in art history courses, including 12 semester hours in advanced courses taken at the University of Iowa.
For the minor, courses numbered ARTH:2130 Introduction to African Architecture and above are considered advanced. Students must maintain a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 2.00 in the minor. Course work in the minor may not be taken pass/nonpass.
Students earning a major in art and a minor in art history may count one art history course required for the art major toward the requirements for the art history minor; they must consult with their advisors.

- ARTH:1050, From Cave Paintings to Cathedrals: Survey of Western Art I, 3 semester hours
- ARTH:1060, From Mona Lisa to Modernism: Survey of Western Art II, 3 semester hours
- ARTH:1070, Asian Art and Culture, 3 semester hours
- ARTH:1095, Native American Art, 3 semester hours
- Or a course numbered ARTH:2000 or above

Important notes for the Minor in Art History
- Only one art history course used for the minor can be taken outside of UI
- Any course taken outside of UI needs approval from the head of art history for the Minor in Art History
- Studio art majors may NOT share hours or courses with the Minor in Art History, with the exception of one survey level ARTH course. See your advisor for planning.
- Art BA 39 semester hours + 12 semester hours art history minor = 51 semester hours of art and 56 semester hours non-art
- BFA 62 semester hours + 12 semester hours art history minor = 74 semester hours of art and 56 semester hours of non-art
