The University of Iowa established the medium of printmaking as a major artistic discipline, led by Mauricio Lasansky (1914-2012), whose work was featured in the inaugural exhibition of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City in 1967.

Our faculty today continue Iowa's printmaking legacy, attracting students, collectors, and enthusiasts from around the world. They exhibit work internationally—including in biennial faculty art exhibitions on the University of Iowa campus—and are regularly invited to speak and teach at art schools, museums, and galleries. In addition, the printmaking area educates the public, using large collections of works in the UI Stanley Museum of Art and the School of Art, Art History, and Design Office of Visual Materials.
