Ben Eastman is a first-year graduate student pursuing a master's degree in 3D Design with a secondary studio emphasis in printmaking. Ben intends to specialize his research by creating objects and furnishings that ‘soften’ spaces. Taken literally, softening a space might occur by adding soft materials to traditionally ‘hard’ furnishings or by accentuating color and playful shapes. Taken figuratively and alluding to a broader philosophy of design, softening a space is an effort to subvert the serious, exclusive nature of high design by creating environments defined by objects that evoke childlike joys, demystify the secrets of mass production, and embrace the vulnerability of accepting imperfection. In this sense, ‘soft’ is synonymous with tranquility, potential, and fun.
