The sculpture & intermedia program at the University of Iowa prioritizes conversation that invites multiple perspectives into the process of self-discovery and supports each student’s pathway through the field of contemporary ideas and art practice.  Sculpture & intermedia is comprised of two distinct disciplines that have a rich history and symbiosis in the School. This purposeful union enhances creative opportunities for students and fosters new avenues for research.

The undergraduate Intermedia curriculum in the sculpture & intermedia program focuses on conceptual development and critical thinking while teaching skills in time-based media production and performance. Emphasizing the union of theory and practice, Intermedia offers a holistic education in contemporary art practice, rooted in the avant-garde. Scholarships are available on a competitive basis for exceptional students to support their creative work.

The creativity, breadth, and rigor of an undergraduate education in Intermedia prepares our graduates for success in many fields. In addition to pursuing graduate study in art, recent BFA graduates have found work in independent film and music production, education, publishing, nonprofit and arts administration, graphic design, computer programming, and commercial media production.  Students work with faculty who are exhibiting artists with an active studio practice. The program has dedicated Instructional Services Specialists who are expert technicians in the studio.

BFA Students enjoy shared studio space and extended access to digital production equipment and facilities. Intermedia students have access to experimental installation space dedicated to the program. Additionally, there are six galleries through the School Art and Art History, where students can book exhibition space.
